High-performance CNC technologies for safety and efficiency of rail transportation

Railway industry is a strategic pillar for sustainable mobility and long distance logistic. Today, with the increasing demand of fast, reliable and eco-friendly transportation, railway sector is into a wide technological innovation. The production of passenger, high-speed, cargo and metropolitan trains need high-precision mechanical components able to resist to long lasting mechanical stress and critical environmental conditions.

Problems and critical issues of this sector

Mechanical machining for railway industry faces some challenges:

Need of high geometrical accuracy, in particular for critical safety components like axles, brakes and coupling systems

Hard-to-cut materials like hardened and stainless steel that ensure resistance to stress, collisions and corrosion

Big dimension components that need milling machines with a rigid structure and a wide working area

Repeatability and dimensional balance that are essential for high-volume manufacturing

Strict regulatory standards (like EN 15085 and EN 13261) that force high quality control levels

Components for Railway sector

The wide variety of mechanical components for the railway touches every functional area of these vehicles. Among most complex parts there are bogies, heart of suspension and guide system of the train: Gruppo Parpas’ machining centers can machine frames, bearing slots, supports, spring plates and suspensions with high geometrical accuracy and structural rigidity.

Also wheels and axles have a key role: our machines are used to machine keyway, brake disk seat and encoder surface with high-accuracy and perfect repeatability.

Main structures of railway cars like windows and doors profiles, light alloy beams and reinforcement plates needs to combine rigidity and lightweight. This involves machining of large but thin parts made from hard-to-cut alloys.

Among critical machining we have braking systems components (like disks, levers, supports and sensor slots) that require high standards for planarity, symmetry and concentricity mechanical machining.

Other applications are pantographs (arms, frames and contact plates) and coupling systems (automatic hooks, slots, coupling surfaces) production.

Lastly, we have the onboard electronics like: inverter housings, propulsion systems base, heatsinks and protective cages. These components need accuracy and the ability to manage heat, vibrations and electromagnetic compatibility.
